OVER THE WALL AN' ALL

OVER THE WALL AN' ALL
© Farouk Asvat

What can do, Brotther?
My ma didn't grow me up so well
Feeding me tinfish-curry an' all
So I don't understand so good
What is going on here
With all this fancy politics an' all

But I tune you, my Brotther,
Mandela has gone over the wall an' all
Dancing the Compromise with de Klerk;
And our brother, the Gucci Marxist,
Is standing around, Stetson in hand,
Lighting his pipe with his Dunhill lighter,
Having one big bunny chow
In his five million mansion
With Uncle Sol an' all
Entertaining the guys from McDonalds
With caviar and champagne;
They are all, one and all,
So Whitey-shocked, I tune you

But what can do, Brotther?
I tell you I am so chillies
I want to tie the dog loose on them
Poke them in the eye with stainless steel cutlery
Throw them with expensive building material
Because they're all like Big Bosses now;
Don't want to know us, I tune you,
All and one of them

LAS' BUS

LAS' BUS
© Farouk Asvat

     (the 7 o' clock bus to Lenz)

Blue sky blue smoke and bluegums
In the evening haze
As the landscape passes
In fleeting window frames:
     Tired and languid.

Inside, in the overcrowded space
Dagga smoke and cigarette haze mix with the booze,
And Pakree here at the back shouts:

     • "Eh, Devlin, what you doing with that little girl?
         Your chando - sari wife waiting for you,
         give you big hiding."

• 'Heit, howzit?!'

          • "Ah smooth basin, one way."

     • 'Hey Bro', send the beer;
         we know you won by the horses again.'

• "Strues god ninyani kapella tickey-for-free;
    ai, but the bus is full, Jack."

               • 'The driver is blind;
                   he won't hear you.'

• "Prrrt.  Prrrt.
    Mr Dinath, can you come drive this bus for us?"

          • 'Sorry, the boss is enjoying biryani.'

My mother wants me to look like a whiteman

Instead, I'm almost-coloured;
But I will pass for a coolie
Tho' I mix with the darkie boys from Soweto
An' dress like a wiseguy

Anyway, I never mingle with whiteys

AFRIKA’NIN GERÇEĞI

     Turkish translation by © İlyas Tunç

Beyaz adamlara benzememi istiyor annem

Aslında, renkliyim biraz;
Ama hamal sanacaklar beni
Sowetolu zenci çocuklardan ayrılsam
Bir çete üyesi gibi giyinsem bile

Neyse, hiç konuşmuyorum siyahların düşmanı beyaz bir adamla.
